Tips to Prep Your Classroom for the Next Year

Hi y’all,

As we know, the 2019-2020 school year did not go the way any of us initially thought it would. I miss my class, and have missed them since March 13th.

I’ve gone to school a few times to pack things up and keep them organized, I know some teachers have not yet been allowed to go back to their schools depending on what phase they are in. You can watch my cleaning vlog here.

I keep seeing pins on Pinterest for making sure you’re ready for the next school year. At this point, we still don’t know what August and September will look like. However, there are things I do every year in May that help prepare me for the upcoming school year. Most of these are fill a bin with these items that you’ll definitely use the first week of school. I try to mix up my get to know you activities because each class is different.

  1. I put read alouds in a special cabinet so that students can’t read them ahead of time.
  2. I put all of my subject binders in the same place so I can find them easily (my bookshelf has to be moved every year so it has to be empty).
  3. I keep one binder of Morning Meeting ideas along with other beginning of the year activities.
  4. All of my student supplies (crayons, colored pencils, markers, blank paper, etc.) go in student cubbies. This way, when I’m setting up in August, I just take down the sheet that covers the cubbies and pull them out and they’re ready to go. The last week of school (in a normal year), I have the students check to make sure everything is good to go for the next year (pencils sharp, throw out dried up markers, etc). I also have my kids clean out their cubbies, and Clorox wipe them down so they’re nice and fresh for the next student.
  5. I put my teacher supply bins where their lunchboxes go. These are normally on my teacher bookshelf with my binders, but have to be moved every summer. This way, I’m using space they would normally use and it’s freed up quickly when I’m putting my classroom back together.

Do you prep for the next school year at the end of the one that is ending?
