Home Organization

Home organization. This is something I’ve struggled with other the years, especially since the house I live in right now doesn’t have any built-in storage minus closets.

One thing that I don’t like is spending a ton of money to organize. It’s tough when so many organizational things are so expensive, so I tried to go to places that have easily accessible things or things that you could swap out for something else that is similar.

I’ve also talked about home decor. Decor is great, I love decorating. Everyone loves a good vibe and feeling to their home. But, the decor can also be functional. I picked neutral colors when selecting items to show y’all; however, you can pick different colors that fit your color scheme.

Home Office Organization

Letter Tray | This is great for paper organization, especially if you keep your papers in folders. This is great if you have papers to store on top of your desk.

White Letter/Legal File Box | This is great for papers if you’re storing them under something or on top of something.

Acrylic Slim File Box | I love these! I use these more in my classroom than at home; however, they still work great for papers.

Desktop Organizer | This is great if you have a desk that does not have a lot of drawer storage. This will look so good sitting on top but still allows you to be organized.

Desk Drawer Organizers | These are great to keep things from rolling around and getting messed up in your drawers.

Wall Calendar | It’s important to know what everyone is doing and what dates are important. The home office is a great place to have a home calendar going on so you always know what is going on. An acrylic calendar like this one is going to be more expensive, but you can change it out for whatever you like and what fits your budget.

Bins | Bins like these are great for a variety of reasons, but particularly for holding documents and other things you might not need all of the time, but may still need on hand. For instance, tax documents that you have to hold on to will be right at home in these bins. They can be swapped out for toys later on.

Craft Organization Drawers | These are great whether you’re a crafter or you just need a place to put little bobbles.

Home Organization for the Bedroom/Closet

Shoe Organizer | I love this. I have a 3 tiered one in my closet for my shoes and it is so helpful. Mine will expand, which the one linked doesn’t do. However, it’s so nice to have so much extra space by moving shoes off the floor. This is not helpful if you have a lot of tall boots though, besides the fact it’s creating some extra space for them. Shoe boxes seem to be an upcoming product; however, this is very limiting for how many shoes you can put in them. If you have space in your closet, you can also do this hanging one…

Jewelry Box | This one is very customizable. I got one when I was in high school or college that was engraved. If you want a smaller one, or one good for travel, check out this one. Erin McDermott is branching out into textiles and home goods and I’m so excited. I got one for Christmas, and I love it! Also, love my jewelry stand. I use it for my longer necklaces that get easily tangled.

Hangers | This is one of my favorite tips for organization, and one I didn’t always think about. You want as many of your hangers to be the exact same as you can. When they are all the same, they take up the same amount of space. I personally prefer wooden hangers, but they’re expensive. If you can’t get your hands on wooden hangers, felt hangers are also nice. But, I will say you need to be prepared to replace them! At least in my experience, they break so often.

Drawer Dividers | These are incredible, especially for socks and intimates. They help you know exactly what you have, so there is no more just throwing them in the drawer (or box). I picked the ones linked because they are expandable; however, there are so many options, and I’ve gotten them at Home Goods before.

Clothing Rack | Okay, I’m just going to throw myself under the bus…yes, I have one. I will say this is so nice to have. I use mine as storage for the clothes I’ve listed to my Poshmark account so that they’re separate.

Kitchen Organization

Food Canisters | I love these because they are sleek and nonintrusive.

Reusable Food Storage Containers | These are fantastic because you can keep your leftovers in them. These are also dishwasher and microwavable safe.

Spice Rack | This is a fantastic spice rack. It allows you to use less counter space, but everything is accessible.

Coffee Pod Holder | While this is not necessary for me since I don’t drink coffee, this is a great way to keep all your coffee pods in one place. If you don’t drink coffee, this could be good for something small. In fact, as far as home organization goes, you can use this in another part of the home for small things.

Drawer Organization | Drawer organization is so useful because it helps keep all the little things where they should be.

Pull Out Cabinet Organizer | This is amazing for under the sink (for both kitchen and bathrooms!).

Over the Sink Roll-Up Drying Rack | This is ingenious. A roll-up drying rack that goes over your sink allows you to save space and only have it out when you need it!

Sponge/Scrubber holder | Have a home for your sponge and/or scrubber! This not only helps to prevent gross bacteria from forming, but you’ll always know where it is.

General Home Organization Tips

  1. Have a place for everything | Everything needs a home and it should live in that home.
  2. Practice and live by the 5 minute rule | If it only takes 5 minutes, go ahead and put it away now. If it will take longer, do a longer time at the end of every day.
  3. Buy less stuff and declutter | Take the time to get rid of things you aren’t using and only buy new things that you need.
  4. Fold your clothes in drawers efficently | Stacking your clothes is not efficent. Instead, you should have them on their side so you can see what they are and pull directly from there.
  5. Organize in a way that you find useful | Anyone can give you tips on how to organize, but if it isn’t useful for you, you won’t stick with it and that is the most important thing.
  6. Consistency | Be consistent with your organization.
  7. Don’t spend a ton of money | Organization doesn’t have to be expensive. The Dollar Tree, Amazon, Target, and Walmart all have inexpensive options that will work.
  8. Pick a day to work on a room | Don’t overwhelm yourself when you’re getting started on organizing. Instead, pick one day to work on the bathroom, bedroom, kitchen, etc. For some rooms, it might be a weekend.
  9. Have systems in place | Create and have a system in place for everything. For instance, what are you going to do with mail? Know ahead of time and it will make your life so much easier.
  10. Lessen your flexibility | Flexibility is great to have. There is not a question about that; however, your organization will be better if you’re more rigid with it because that is what keeps you organized.

What room are you starting with? I think I’ll be starting in the bathroom since it’s the smallest room!

xx,

Lindsey
